Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker Joe Straus have issued budget instructions to all state agencies as they begin crafting their budget requests. Included in the instructions is the direction to cut baselines by 4%. To read more…

Saving the state butterfly.

Texas A&M University and Sam Houston State University have been awarded $500,000 for a joint research project to study the monarch butterfly and its migratory habits. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering putting the monarch on the federal endangered species list. Data from this project aims to determine the level of protection needed. To read more…

Pre-K grants awarded.

Education Commissioner Mike Morath has announced how $116 million in Pre-K grants will be split among 578 school districts and charter schools. Grant amounts range from $3,600 to $9.2 million. Awards will be paid in two installments—the first immediately and the second in the fall. To read more…
