Former Texas State Senator Teel Bivins passed away in Amarillo on Monday. In addition to serving in the Texas Senate from 1988 to 2004, Bivins was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden where he served until 2006. Bivins was 61.

Republican Geoff Bailey announced that he will run for the House District 102 seat currently held by Rep. Carol Kent (D-Dallas).

Naomi Gonzalez, an attorney in the El Paso County Attorney’s Office will run against Rep. Norma Chavez (D-El Paso) in the Democratic primary for House District 76.

The Republican Party of Texas’ executive committee chose Cathie Adams as their new chairman. She takes over for Tina Benkiser who stepped down last month to join Gov. Rick Perry’s re-election campaign.

Early voting continues through Friday for the November 3rd general election. There are eleven proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution on the ballot. For an explanation of each proposed amendment, read the Texas Legislative Council’s Analyses of Proposed Constitutional Amendments.
